Artist Jamie Winter in a cautious stance without assistance.

If "Warhol and Michaelangelo had a child who was  Indian, the Child's  Art might have looked like Jamie Winter's.

Jamie is a descendent  of the  the Hochunk tribe. Her Grandfather migrated from Ireland on one of the coffin ships and made his way  to Wisconsin where he met and married his Hochunk Bride.  Jamie comes from a long line of Artists including her Mother and most of her Mother's family.

Miss Winter holds Master's Degrees in Art and Social Work from  UW Madison in Wisconsin where she focused on Color Theory and Painting. She was chosen for a fellowship based on her GPA.

Jamie struggled her whole life with Manic Depression and was hospitalized for two years at a state hospital at a very young age and went to school under the "1971 Disability Act"  being learning disabled.

Currently in addition to struggling with Manic Depression Jamie was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's Disease, suffered a stroke and was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor that causes excruciating headaches.

In addition Jamie has lost full vision in her left eye and uses "assistive technology devices" such as a walker to get around and special lenses and lighting to see her art she paints.

Despite all these things which of just one would overwhelm any person, Jamie has a great attitude and enduring spirit to cope with all of this and is currently working with DVR and Easter Seals who referred her here to Disabled Artists Network to sell her work online. Prior to that, as is a problem with a many people with Disability's being homeless is very common but Jamie now has an apartment and spends many hours painting.

In her own words - "I am Trying" and you have to respect someone who deals with all those things and continues to try despite all the odds.

Artist Statement

I paint Water Color, Gouche and  Oils. I prefer to paint than spend any money on anything else but supplies. I am a color theorist and do pseudo realistic work sometimes bordering on the abstract and sometimes more towards the realistic. I find the combination fascinating. My subject matter comes in periods of "Mania" and I will work on up to 14 various pieces at once. I always see my pieces like a flash and draw them out. this way, if I flip and get depressed I can still work. I find that some of my work is very centered on my depressive states as if it is looming in the background ready to nail me... there for some of my work seems to be terror and others peaceful, still others peaceful with something wicked lurking.

I started painting when I was young, my mom is an artist along with most of her family. I have won prizes and have sold work through Easter Seals which assisted their program. but I never seem to care about what people think of my art. It is so personal and I'm driven to do it, so even if no one ever saw any of it, I would still paint".

I spend a day , a few days, a week even a year... depends on the piece and the direction. if I lose the thread when I crash into depression I just wait....

The compelling images of Jamie Winter draws you in leaving you in the exact moment of the painting as though you are a part of it.

It is a rare kind of Art that can do this so it is a treat to gaze upon it and for those who own it they will never tire of staring into the fine paintings of Jaime Winter.
