"Canary Row"
Not for Sale.
I thought it might be nice to include my
very first painting, "Canary Row". It's funny, when I first started, I
had no idea what I was doing. I was using oils and canvas boards. By
accident, I kinda painted backwards. I created the picture by removing
paint, I uncovered the image. All my first paintings were monochromatic,
'cause I really didn't know what I was doing. I still really feel like
just a caretaker of this gift.
"Laurie Homan gets a write up
in the New York Times"!
The Atlantic City art show my work was in was written
up in The New York Times in the Feb. 26 edition under "The Thinking
Man's Atlantic City" by Joe Queenan. The main portion about disabled
artists is found in the last 2 paragraphs of the article:
"The idea that the flickering embers of civilization
were being kept alive in Atlantic City by mere students struck me as
sweet and ironic: More inspiring still was the discovery that the
exhibition had been sponsored by VSA Arts of NJ and featured works by
people with mental, emotional or physical disabilities. In other words,
the only real art you could find in Atlantic City was work made by what
the art world condescendingly refers to as "outsiders"
October 2004 Solo Show
Laurie with Ray, Bert and Gene
Gene is the
oldest and the photo was taken 2 months before his death. I met Gene at
a luncheon given by our local art Guild for their volunteers; I was a
volunteer. My mother had just died from lung cancer the previous week and
I didn't know for sure if I would attend until I actually arrived at the
luncheon that day. I wasn't dressed in anything formal, although most
everyone else did, I wore jeans, and didn't much care what anyone
thought. I found myself plopping down at a table and was immediately
joined by an older man who was also dressed in jeans, except his were
covered with ink drawings & doodles. We became instant friends & spoke
almost daily for the last 2 years of his life. Gene described himself as
an original hippy and he had traveled the world over. He was schooled in
art and had lived off his creative work through out his life. He was the
most spiritual atheist I've ever known. The ink pieces were the result
of Gene's teachings and it allowed me to disconnect my mind from the
process of creating. With his tutoring I was able to use abstract work to
access my emotional center. In the picture you can see a glow around Gene
that was not from any light source in the room.
Artist Laurie Homan
Before concentrating on her Art
Career Ms. Homan graduated from the Monmouth Police Academy and served her
community for many years. In addition to serving her community,
Laurie has many skills and accomplishments that include being a "National
Karate Champion", a "Pastor", a "Musician", "Writer", "Legal Secretary"
and much much more.
In l994 a diagnosis of Multiple
Sclerosis brought permanent disability by 1998.
Laurie found that painting
brings her peace and therapeutic like healing. Optic Neuritis caused
her to loose her vision more than 5 times. When there is a reprieve
she paints. Assistive devices such as a leg brace, cane or wheelchair help
with mobility.
With love, care and assistance of
her partner, Laurie is Mom to three adopted babies who were drug
babies, but who now have a loving home environment.
"My goal as an artist is to create
pieces of art that can share the experiences and lessons I have learned.
I have gone through a great deal
and I am a better person for it. I want to be a light in this dark world.
I am proof that the human spirit can sustain a great deal of difficulty
and still go on to create beauty. I want to be an example for others.
I started painting in Oct 2000
using oils. Over the past 5 years, I have tried Ink, Acrylics, and mixed
media. I am currently working mostly with mixed media and my work is
varied. I have a realism series I'm working on called "Perfidy".
Landscapes in various mediums, as well as abstract work. I use brushes,
sponges, & rubbing alcohol with inks & liquid acrylics

Perfidy Series
The deliberate breaking of faith,
betrayal of trust; treachery: the definition according to Webster’s New
World dictionary. The world we live in is, by far, much too perfidious.
Examples can be found not only though out our history as human beings, but
can be found, today, at this very moment, in every neighborhood through
out the world. We, as human beings, need to embrace our humanity and to
honor one another. The first step in transforming anything negative, is to
first identify it, then we must accept the truth in order to change it. As
a cop, I saw so many different types of human treachery, so much violence,
selfishness and betrayal, it’s disheartening. It is ugly,
and it is upsetting, but we can no longer continue to close
our eyes to the reality of our world. We have an obligation to acknowledge
it so that we can change it. That is the purpose of this series and will
remain on-going.
